Excel vs. Lotus 123

Lotus 123 and Microsoft Excel are both spreadsheet software programs that have been developed for use in computers. Inasmuch as the basic programs are developed to function on spreadsheets, their design and development have come from different companies and, as would be expected, their functionality is somewhat different. The spreadsheet is software that is designed to allow for improved organization of data in columns and rows. Inasmuch as there is a lot of similarity in how these two programs work, it is also good to know the differences of the programs too. Below is an outline of the differences that the two programs have.

What Was Before Lotus 123

Cell selection in both Excel and Lotus 123 allows the cell to be selected, sorted and various operations to be handled by different cells. Manipulation of cells in Excel needs one to drag over them so that the range of choice can be selected. Lotus 123 has a reversed order that needs the command to be selected and then the selection of cells.

When it comes to formulas, both programs are designed to be in a cell as opposed to typing in raw data. Excel needs the definition of the formula to start with the ‘=’ sign. It is, however, strange that Lotus 123 does not require the equal sign when entering a formula. The cell ranges are also an item that needs to be mentioned. The definition of range in both programs comes from the definition of the first and last cells. In excel, the different cells are separated using a colon, while in Lotus 123 use of two periods in a row is used to differentiate values.

When Lotus 1-2-3 was first released, the program assumed that the year 1900 was a leap year, even though it actually was not a leap year. This made it easier for the program to handle leap years and caused no harm to almost all date calculations in Lotus 1-2-3.

When it comes to functions, it is important to note that the programs use these in spreadsheets to allow for a routine calculation to be performed. In Excel, the function is inserted into the cells of the spreadsheet by typing in the specific function name. Insertion of the function name in Lotus 123 is however different in that it specifically requires the function name to be inserted preceded by the ‘at’ (@) symbol.
As data sets grow, it can increasingly become challenging to navigate through data, and the use of keyboard shortcuts is preferred in helping fast navigation. Both programs have therefore included a home key that can be used if there is need for fast navigation using a keyboard. Pressing the home key in Excel takes you back to the first cell of the row that you will be navigating on. In Lotus 123, pressing the home key takes you back to the first cell and first row of the spreadsheet.

Many years of innovative thinking and hard work have gone into today's Lotus 1-2-3, to make everything you do with numbers easier and more powerful, whether those numbers come from the Web, corporate databases, or even an associate's Microsoft Excel files. Since version 9.0, Lotus has spent its time in maintenance mode. Lotus 1-2-3 was a spreadsheet program developed by Lotus Software, which is now part of IBM, and was first released on January 26, 1983. Lotus 1-2-3 was not the first spreadsheet application, but because of its capabilities it became the industry standard throughout the 1980s and '90s. The Lotus Development Corporation was founded by Mitchell Kapor, a friend of the developers of VisiCalc. 1-2-3 was originally written by Jonathan Sachs, who had written two spreadsheet programs previously while working at Concentric Data Systems, Inc. To aid its growth, in the UK, and possibly elsewhere, Lotus 1-2-3 was the very first computer software.

Inasmuch as there are differences between how the two spread sheet software works, there is no doubt that the basic functionality of the two programs is the same, and thus it just but boils down to preference. Lotus 123 has, however, been shown to be a software of choice when compared to Excel, with many users preferring Lotus. It, however, seems to all boil down to what seems as the right fit for you rather than one spreadsheet software.

You probably already know that Excel will easily open a wide variety of spreadsheets stored in other formats. One that it will open is spreadsheets originally created in Lotus 1-2-3. If you have some old 1-2-3 files and you want to make sure that they are treated, in Excel, according to Lotus 1-2-3 'rules,' there are a couple of settings you need to pay attention to. These settings are available from the Options dialog box. (See Figure 1.) Choose Options from the Tools menu to display this dialog box.

What Replaced Lotus 123

Make sure the Transition tab is displayed. Notice the two options under Sheet Options; these are what you need to work with:

• Transition Formula Evaluation. When checked, this option causes Excel to open and evaluate 1-2-3 files without losing or changing information. Based on the formulas in the 1-2-3 file, if this option isn't checked, then you might lose some data or some formulas won't calculate the same in Excel as they would have in Lotus 1-2-3. Specifically, with this option selected Excel evaluates text strings as 0 (zero), Boolean expressions as 0 or 1, and database criteria according to the rules used in Lotus 1-2-3.
• Transition Formula Entry. If this check box is selected, then formulas entered in Lotus 1-2-3 version 2.2 syntax are converted to Excel syntax. This option should not be selected if you don't plan on saving the spreadsheet in Excel format.

What Is Lotus 123 Windows 7

Make your settings, as desired, then close the Options dialog box. Open the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet and Excel should process the file according to the settings you made.
